A match in which fortunes swung wildly finally ended in an emphatic seven-wicket win for host nation as Sri Lanka clinches their first home series against Pakistan after the unpredictable tourists suffered a stunning collapse with two days in spare in the second Test at the P Sara Oval. Pakistan, sitting pretty at 285-1 just before lunch on the third day, crashed to 320 all out after the break to leave Sri Lanka a victory target of 171 for a decisive 2-0 lead in the three-match series.
Of the previous five series between the two nations on Sri Lankan soil, Pakistan had won three and drawn two, but the tourists had only themselves to blame for allowing the hosts to re-write history. Pakistan lost their last nine wickets for just 35 runs, their third successive collapse in the series that highlighted their reputation as one of the most unpredictable sides in modern cricket.
Skipper Younus himself triggered the collapse just before lunch when he gifted his wicket, top-edging an ambitious reverse sweep off part-time spinner Paranavitana to the wicket-keeper. It will haunt him long after what a mistake!

As a Pakistani I will be more than happy to see Pakistan team wining the event with flying colors. I don’t want to be in Younus Khan’s shoes today as enormous pressure he has to bear but he knows the value of this win. After World Cup 1992 this will be the next big moment for Pakistan cricket. Huge celebrations expected afterward and people really don’t want to shatter this dream now by just thinking about any other possible match result.
