Abdul Sattar Edhi honored by UNESCO non violence Award

Abdul Sattar Edhi of Pakistan and Frantois Houtart of Belgium were awarded the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO)-Madanjeet Singh Prize on the unanimous recommendation of an international jury to UNESCO Director-General Konchiro Matsuura, according to an announcement in Paris.

GHQ Attack Hostages Freed

The brazen attack on one of the most secure areas of the country in the middle of the day, and the taking of hostages, shows a new level of audacity from the militants. It is the third major militant strike in Pakistan in a week and was carried out as the army prepares a major offensive against the militants in their northwestern stronghold of South Waziristan on the Afghan border.

Aleem Dar Won ICC Umpire of the Year Award

Pakistan’s Aleem Sarwar Dar, the look a like of Waqar Younus was awarded the Umpire of the Year award 2009 at the annual ICC awards in Johannesburg. It was the first time that a Pakistani umpire and anyone other than Taufel had picked up the accolade in the six years that the ceremony has taken place.

Video confirms death of Baitullah Mehsud

The Taliban in Pakistan have released a video confirming that their former leader Baitullah Mehsud is dead. Mehsud was killed on August 6 in the tribal region of South Waziristan in a missile attack by a suspected US drone.

samosaIt cost just three rupees. Squashed between a doughy naan and seasoned with a splash of green chutney of dubious provenance, the ‘samosa-naan’ was sold for three bucks a pop at my college. With the triple dose of carbs – potatoes, pastry and naan – it was obviously filling. Less obvious is how satisfying the concoction was: the naan’s rubbery dough, the crushed but still crisp samosa shell, the spicy potatoes with little bursts of flavor in the form of anardana (dried pomegranate seeds) and dhaniya (coriander) seeds, the tart chutney. Is talk of textural complexity too pretentious for what is essentially a meal of necessity? I say no.

Lailat al-Qader and Juma tul Wida

This year shabe qadr has been followed by Jumatul wida. Lailat al-Qader, (Night of Power), commemorates the night when Holy Quran was first revealed to the Prophet Mohammad (pbuh) through the angel Gabriel. It falls on the 27th night of the holy month of Ramadan, which will end this week with the festival of Eid ul-Fitr. The nation will also observe Jumatul Wida, the last Friday of the holy month of Ramadan, with traditional religious zeal and reverence today. Millions of fasting people will offer Friday prayers at mosques and prayer grounds.
