Ever since people started fleeing the conflict in Swat and Buner two months ago, there has been incessant talk that they are returning home. There has been an almost continuous stream of stories about how people have packed up their scant belongings and are crowding the roads out of Mardan, returning to their former lives and whatever destruction awaits them. But the people I have spoken to in the villages of Mardan District tell a very different story. They say that although they are desperate to return home they will ...

Tens of thousands of children were not vaccinated because militants in the affected areas had opposed the vaccination campaigns. This is thought to have contributed to the 117 polio cases reported in 2008, a sharp increase on the 32 reported in 2007. So far in 2009 12 new cases have been reported, compared to seven by the same date in 2008, according to data maintained by the Global Polio Eradication Initiative.
The presence of thousands of children from Swat and other northern areas in Pakistan’s camps for internally displaced persons (IDPs) ...

In Pakistan’s remote district of Upper Dir near the border with Afghanistan, the shock of the attack on the mosque during Friday prayers turned to anger a day later
That is when at least 400 armed tribesmen formed a civilian army, commonly called a “lashkar,” and started attacking Taliban militants in several villages. Reports say anywhere from seven to 13 Taliban militants were killed and several of their hideouts destroyed.

Police have arrested 39 suspected miscreants from various relief camps of Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in northwestern Pakistan. The News Network International quoted an official as saying that the miscreants were nabbed from four big camps during the last 48 hours and shifted to an undisclosed location for interrogation.
