Gojra Incident: I am ashamed and you?

3 August 2009 16 Comments

I have no regret to mention that I am ashamed what had happened in Gojra with the minorities living in Pakistan. I am ashamed o those who did this criminal act for whatever the reason. It seems like the incidents of partition which we used to see in films and dramas that Muslims and their homes being attacked. Were those sacrifices for this day?

The incident news as reported by Dawn was;

A mob burnt 75 houses of Christians over the alleged desecration of the Holy Quran in Azafi Abadi at Chak 95-JB on Gojra-Faisalabad Road, 32 kilometres from here, late on Thursday. The mob has been torched by the reports that Mukhtar Maseeh, Talib Maseeh and his son Imran Maseeh had desecrated the papers inscribed with Holy Quran verses at a wedding ceremony. 50 houses were damaged when the mob in a frenzy of rage held a jury where Talib Maseeh was asked to offer apology over the incident. Talib, however, denied the incident and refused to offer apology. In the ensuing developments, hundreds of the people attacked Azafi Basti.

At least six are dead, burned alive, mainly women and children according to the BBCThis part (per the New York Times) just makes it all the worse:

“The Punjab law minister, Rana Sanaullah, said that the authorities had investigated the allegation of a Koran being defaced but that “our initial reports say that there has not been any incident of desecration.”

The incident has been started from Thursday but ignored by the officials. They let it spread by the next day and even today the situation in the region was tense. Rangers have been deployed long after the damage has done. It was an administrative failure and even though ‘notice’ of the acts of arson ‘was taken’ by the chief minister, the prime minister, the president and the administration looked totally helpless in the face of the repeat of violence, this time in Gojra city on Saturday.

A federal minister and a provincial minister dispatched to the area on Friday could do little to defuse the situation. This is a typical blasphemy case in its various details. What is unfortunately changing is the scale and intensity of the reaction as well as its frequency. Only a few weeks ago, rows upon rows of houses belonging to Christians were set on fire in Kasur.

We are deeply grieved on the loss of our Christian brothers and sisters and we are with them in this time of despair. Raise your voice against this discrimination and make Pakistan a better place to live for every one. Write blog post or comment on related articles to get your voice registered or at least spread a word. Like on twitter many Pakistanis had written blog posts and tweeted them with the message that “here is my post on #Gojra where is yours?” We all should unite to prove that Islam is the religion of peace and we condemn any such action in the name of religion.

Shame! Shame on all of us. There are no words to describe this. The government must immediately bring the perpetrators to justice and make a horrible example of them. What may we ask is the Chief Minister doing about this? Is he going to remain an idle spectator or is he going to show some backbone and take these fanatics who sully our already muddied name.

What Punjab Government has been doing for the last several months now; the most shocking aspect of this incident is that the district president of PML-N himself is involved in this heinous act of violence.PML-N sympathy with religious fanatics has never been a secret now.I think we as a society lack tolerance and only shown knee jerk reaction which proves fatal at the end of the day

  • Khubaib said:

Religious fanaticism will eat up the very basis of the country if we do not curb this trend forthwith.Big political parties like PML-N needs to realign its political philosophy keeping in view the demand of the day. Only PPP has a true secular outlook with roots in all four provinces in the country.

  • Khubaib said:

The Punjab Government must understand that Punjab is the heartland of the country and Pakistan is on microscopic scrutiny these days.Every news emerging from Pakistan is immediately taken up by International media and what sort of image are we portraying

Human rights are enshrined in the constitution of Pakistan and religion is often used falsely to suppress the minorities.

  • Khubaib said:

Christians were not involved in desecration of Holy Quran. Imagine what would have happened had PPP Government would not have ordered militarey crackdown against these savages in Swat and SWA

  • Khubaib said:

Iam sure Rehman Malik would show the same courage as he has shown in Swat as the Punjab Governments has utterly failed in restoring peace in Gojra.

I feel sorry for what had happened and my heartiest condolence to the families, just want to convey that, this is not what all of us want but there are few who take advantage of emotional concepts and believes thus escalate indifferences in society to achieve their own goals. I pray to Allah that one day we would be able to unite in a way where we could see who is our friend and who is not.
