American Incoherent dealings

After a long period of 30 years finally American Government thought that their dealings with Islamabad were not so well. It seems that President Zardari had done some thing exceptional on his “International begging tour”. America was never like this before but the problem is that new interests could be developed by the course of time.

At the Foreign Press Centre and the White House, Hillary Clinton said ‘it is fair to say that our policy towards Pakistan over the last 30 years has been incoherent. I don’t know any other word’. Hillary Clinton said the United States was working with Pakistan to determine and disrupt the route for supplying weapons to the Taliban.

The secretary recalled that in the 1980s, the US partnered with Pakistan to help train the Mujahideen. Mrs. Clinton said while it was fair to apportion responsibility to Pakistan, but the US also shared the responsibility for what happened during and after the Afghan war.

To defeat the Soviet Union in Afghanistan, the CIA worked hand in glove with Pakistani agencies to bring together militant extremists from all over the world to form an international brigade to operate from the tribal areas of Pakistan. No thought was given to the long-term implications of arming and training these elements that were to later turn their guns on their own creators.

The fallout of the war unleashed by the US in Afghanistan turned out to be catastrophic for Pakistan. The country was flush with lethal weapons from Klashnikovs, rocket launchers and landmines to Ack-ack guns. The weapons were acquired by criminals and anti-state elements to the detriment of law and order in Pakistan. The US looked the other way as some militant groups resorted to producing heroin to raise funds. This caused tens of thousands of Pakistanis to turn into drug addicts. The international jihadi brigade trained thousands of others who are now challenging the writ of the state in Swat, Buner and Waziristan. The greatest crime the US committed was to turn its back on Pakistan once the Soviet army had withdrawn, leaving it to deal with thousands of local and foreign battle-hardened militants as it deemed fit.

It is all because of American intrests that we are still suffering. Whether it was Afghan war or war against terrorist, Pakistan has always paid a price to be an ally of US. We definitely needs to revise our foreign policy in order to protect our sovereignty as an Independante nation.
